Steering Committee Minutes
Conference Call
December 7, 2005
4:15 p.m.
Present: Ann Okerson, Yale; David
Valone, Quinnipiac; Steve Berizzi, Norwalk Community College; Sue Walker,
Yale; Danuta Nitecki, Yale; Anja Smit; NELINET; Suzy Taraba, Wesleyan.
Recorder: Jessica Slawski, Yale.
Ann Okerson began the call by stating
that the new Teagle Web site is up and running and has a lot of
information about what the Teagle project has accomplished to date. She
inquired what everyone else thought about it. Sue Walker thought it was
clear and easy to navigate. David Valone agreed.
[Suzy Taraba arrives]
Ann caught Suzy up on the discussion to
this point. Suzy likes the new Web site, but said she got lost in the
survey of the faculty because there was almost too much interesting
information. Dave agreed. Ann asked whether there is anything else to be
done with the data. Danuta Nitecki inquired whether the people surveyed
were just from Yale. Ann explained that liaisons from 8 or 9
institutional liaisons were asked to give the survey to their faculty.
Danuta suggested having a place on the Web site for contact information in
case people wanted to find out more about the Teagle project.
Ann stated that there were two more
items on the agenda with the next related to the second Teagle project
workshop. There were three suggestions:
1. A guide or tool to
help students/teachers when they travel to other collections.
2. David suggested a pre-made module
with packets that can be tailored to any subject.
3. Suzy suggested a workshop about
how to interpret visual materials.
Suzy commented that she likes both the
module and the interpreting visual materials ideas. Danuta suggested
combining them by having a visual materials workshop, with the product of
that workshop being a module that can be tailored to each institution.
Dave and Steve agreed. Danuta stated that pictures could be used in
teaching any subject, for example, American studies, English, Art history.
David asked if Danuta knows anyone in
the field that might be brought in to speak on this topic. Danuta replied
that she has a few people in mind. Sue suggested the possibility of
setting up a few stations with groups of images that participants could
put together as a quick project and then give a small presentation at the
end of the workshop. Danuta thought this would be interesting if applied
to different disciplines. For example, an art historian would use images
differently in teaching than a teacher of American history.
Ann stated that there is enough funding
for workshop development. If speakers need to be paid, we can do this.
People who do prep work for the grant can get paid as long as the costs
are reasonable. Ann asked if anyone on the Steering Committee would
volunteer or knew of anyone who would organize a planning committee.
Danuta volunteered to do some planning work and asked when the workshop
would be held. Ann replied that the earliest possible date would be the
beginning of February but the most plausible time would be in March. By
early January, the Steering committee should have a good idea of the
workshop topic, so that there will be time to advertise.
Suzy asked if this time frame
interfered with anyone's spring break. Dave and Steve both said their
breaks were not scheduled until the middle of March.
The group agreed that the event will be
held on a Friday or a Saturday. This would mean the 3rd or 4th of March
as a date for the workshop. A fleshed out plan should be done by the 2nd
week in January. If the concept, title and theme were agreed on by then,
publicity could be started and the rest of the details organized. During
the January conference call, the Committee will decide whether the 3rd or
4th of March is a better for the workshop.
Danuta stated that before January she
would try to talk to faculty, those who have thought about how their
teaching is impacted through the use of images. She welcomed any
suggestions for presenters who would be willing to talk about their
experiences, possibly also on how to tell if students are using images.
Ann asked if anyone would mind if a number of the speakers at the workshop
were from Yale. Dave and Steve said no.
Ann stated that she will be on leave
from January till April and that Danuta has offered to step in while she
is gone. Ann also introduced Anja Smit of NELINET, who is documenting for
this project just how special collections are being used by the 9
participating institutions. Ann suggested adding Anja as an honorary
member of the Steering committee. Anja stated that her plan is to visit
all institutions and talk with their librarians and faculty. Her
interviews would be completed sometime in February.
The group agreed that the next
conference call will be at 4 p.m. on January 11th. At that time, a topic
for the workshop will be finalized and the publicity will be planned.
Anja will report in February of her progress documenting the activities at
the various schools.
Call ended 5:00pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Jessica Slawski
