I. Discussion of Oral History Workshop

Harriet Bergmann began the segment stating that the website containing workshop information is at <Steve Berizzi asked whether the agenda for the workshop was final. He questioned the length of the lectures. Harriet stated that the time mapped out for the lectures was lengthy because there will be a lot of information, followed by a lot of questions. Ann said that people given a 15 minute break usually don't come back until 30 minutes later, which is why the break in the morning is 30 minutes.

The question of food was raised, and Ann stated she was leaning toward a buffet arrangement because it would provide better food than a boxed lunch. The Law School will not allow us to eat there, so lunch will be served in the Sterling Memorial Library Lecture Hall. Sue asked if the guests could go to Manuscripts and Archives and walk around during lunch. Ann stated that department is closed on the weekends.

Harriet reported the suggestion that there should be listening stations at lunch so people could listen to oral history interviews. However, given the number of people at this workshop, listening has been integrated into the lectures so that everyone will hear the interviews. Suzy suggested making a CD for everyone to take home with them; but there is a concern with rights clearance. Harriet will talk to Andy to see if he has anything or can put anything together quickly.

Advertising for the workshop was discussed. Sue Walker created a very attractive flyer together using one of the images from the Walpole collection. Harriet and Ann agreed it could be sent out to people as an attachment, because it might get more publicity than if it was posted only on the website. Suzy suggested sending out an e-mail messge to faculty, grad students, and librarians. Harriet will get word out to librarians from each of the Teagle participant schools. Suzy suggested using the people from the Steering Committee as points of contact at each institution to spread the word. All agreed.

Sue Walker asked if there is a registration deadline. Harriet suggested using Wednesday, October 19, as the cutoff. This would give some time for the caterers to be notified. Graduate students would be allowed in as long as the numbers were within quota for each institution.

Harriet suggested using the idea of special collections on a smaller scale such as community colleges. The focus would be on what schools with fewer resources would do within the Teagle group, by giving them ideas about how to explore the resources in their community. Steve suggested it would be useful to get representatives from all colleges in one spot but would be a logistics problem. Dave agreed. Ann suggested getting people together over a networking lunch or an informal discussion. Steve and Harriet agreed that this would be useful.

Harriet Bergmann had to leave to teach.

Ann suggested ending the meeting since Harriet had left and her input would be needed. She suggested that everyone should present strong ideas for the second workshop before the early November conference call. The conference call would be used to flesh out the actual program.

The group noted that workshops and other future events should be developed and promoted at least two months in advance. The notice for the Oral History workshop had been insufficient and this causes loss of participants.

Conference call ended 4:32pm
