Collection
Description: The Historical Collections Department has a webpage at: http://www.bportlibrary.org/HC/index.htm.
The Historical Collections has the records of several community organizations, civic groups, and associations. The papers of these organizations are generally housed in the Historical Collections Archives and vary in scope and date range. Such organizations include the Bridgeport Scientific Society, 1877-1916, Connecticut Audubon Society, 1898-present, Bridgeport Ladies Charitable Society, 1888-present, and many others.
In addition to the archives, the Historical Collections has dozens of newspaper clipping and vertical files with information on local organizations including the following categories: health and social service, education, arts and culture, business, environmental, and community-neighborhood. Newspaper clippings have been taken from local and regional newspapers. Some files contain just a few articles and some fill several boxes and date back to the 1910's. Vertical files contain an ecclectic mixture of brochures, flyers, invitations, programs and other ephemera that have been collected or donated over the years.
No specific holdings are mentioned, but the collection includes manuscripts, photographs, newspapers, genealogical materials, and secondary materials.
The Library also has a newspaper collection, genealogy materials, and conducted a labor history oral history program.
