Collection
Description:
The collection includes approximately 25,000 scanned photographs and documents
relating to the history of Thompson. There are three areas
of priority:
- Digital images of early Thompson, especially the mill
villages of North Grosvenordale, Grosvenordale, Quadic, Mechanicsville,
West Thompson, Wilsonville, Quinebaug and Fabyan (New Boston).
- Digital images of Thompson
Hill and East Thompson. Thompson Hill was an old commercial center and
turnpike crossroads in the early 1800s. East Thompson was a busy train depot.
- Thompson
has many mysterious lithic, pre-Columbian stone structures. Presumed to
be the work of Nipmuck Indians, these structures, lacking any written
historical documentation, have been systematically destroyed by home-builders
unaware of their significance. The Society has collected what records and
photographs that exist of these artifacts, perhaps the oldest man-made structures
in Connecticut.
